Bus Trips, Crafts, Presentations, Video Phones and Mass with Father Shawn

Conclude the 2008-2009 Senior Deaf Wellness Program

by Kathy Carey

The Senior Deaf Wellness Program began the 2009 New Year with our January meeting.

We were delighted to have Denise Roskamp from the Shine Program return as a guest speaker. Denise shared her knowledge and insights on Medicare and the Medicare prescription program with the Seniors. This was followed by a lively question and answer session. Denise is always eager and happy to help the seniors with their Medicare questions and she has been a valuable friend and great resource to our program. The February meeting found the seniors busy making beautiful valentine frames. The seniors always enjoy this special craft time led by their good friend Mary Brooks. Again they demonstrated their unique talents. Our March meeting brought the return of our friends from MGH. The nursing students returned with their instructor Tom Dolan to learn about Deaf Culture and the needs of our seniors. The seniors shared their medical stories with the group. There were many very animated and interesting stories. The students are always surprised by the stories and the need of the medical community to become more aware and sensitive to the needs of the deaf community. This has become an annual event and the students always enjoy their day with the seniors. We were also delighted to have Jim Tourangeau join us from Sorenson. Jim gave an excellent presentation on Video Phones. The seniors were really excited about the video phones and had many questions regarding the use and capabilities of the VP. We thank Jim for his time and his very knowledgeable explanation of Video Phones.

Spring arrived and with it the return of our friend Karen Swiech for our April meeting. She returned to lead the group in a special Ukrainian egg craft. There were many different and beautiful designs. The seniors picked up quickly on this unique craft and were eager to show their artistic talents. Our May meeting featured a new speaker, Bethany from Deaf Inc. Bethany shared her expertise on healthy cooking and eating. The seniors had many questions regarding diabetes, cholesterol, bad fats and good fats. A very insightful question and answer session followed her presentation. Bethany hopes to return again to led the group in an exercise session and another presentation.

The May meeting also brought a wonderful surprise! I had no idea that the group had planned a birthday and good-bye party for me. My co-workers from the Office of Cultural Diversity also joined the festivities. They were so delighted to meet the seniors and share the day with them. They had heard so many wonderful stories about the Senior Deaf Wellness program and they were so happy to finally meet everyone. Our last meeting in June ended with a special bus trip to the Pastoral Center. There the seniors were greeted by many employees of the center. Janet Benestad our new Secretary for Faith Formation and Evangelization graciously lead the group on a tour of this beautiful center. The tour was followed by a beautiful Mass in the Bethany Chapel celebrated by our newly ordained priest Father Shawn Carey. This was followed by a delicious lunch in the formal dining room. This was a wonderful way to end our 2008-2009 program. This truly was special day for everyone.

A special thanks to Cher and Mary our interpreters who are always there to help us. Also, the wonderful nurses who give of their time so freely, Joan, Kathy, and Lorraine. We are very fortunate to have these wonderful people who share their talents and time with our seniors. A very special thank you to all our wonderful seniors. This program would not be the success that it is without your constant and enthusiastic support!

Last but not least, a special thank you to everyone for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful group! You have given me more joy and happiness than you can imagine!

God bless each and everyone of you!

Kathy

Golf Tournament for the Deaf: One for the Ages

-Skip Flanagan

On sunny August 10th, people celebrated the 5th anniversary of the Friendship Cup Golf Benefit for Deaf children. The Friendship Cup was a smashing success, raising approximately $65,000. The tournament, led by super-catalysts Sue and Sean Flanagan, drew mass amounts of golfers and celebrities alike; reeling in 300+ golfers and some well known celebrities. Karen Adams of the Channel 12 News in Providence, RI, gold medal goalie for the 1980 USA Olympic Team; Jim Craig, and a 1967 Cy Young winner, RedSox pitcher from the 1967 Dream Team, Jim Lonborg are among the most popular tournament attendees.

None of this could've gone any smoother due to excellent work of the 50+ volunteers working both country clubs and raising every single penny possible to help improve deaf schools internationally. Ledgemont Country Club and Pawtucket Country Club had a formidable one-two punch of volunteer groups consisting of students and staff from UMass Amherst, Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, MA, Newton North High School, The Learning Center for the Deaf, Rhode Island School for the Deaf, and staff from the Beverly School for the Deaf. The volunteers also contributed a great deal in the silent and live auctions. Special thanks to the entire group of wonderful participants.

There were many winners at the tournament, the Teddy's Cup, in honor of Ted Gagnon, my grandfather and proud father of Sue Gagnon-Flanagan, there were winners of the raffle, auctions, mini-games, pool basketball and much more. Yet, the true winners are the ones benefitting from all of them, the deaf children. Winning never felt so good.

Karen Adams, Jim Lonborg and Jim Craig accounted for several thousand of dollars through the live auction. The team USA jersey, several autographed baseballs from the best players who ever set foot on this green earth, and opportunities to play golf with national celebs in foursomes and much more helped add to the excitement.

After leaving a putt short and losing a bet with friend Karen Adams, Sean Flanagan capped off a long, fun Aug. 10, 2009 with a huge front flip into the country club pool. Thanks to everyone and see you guys next year! This one's for the books!

More Access in more places!  Visit St. John's in Hopkinton

By Fr. St. Martin

The good things that are happening at St. John's are God's love made visible for us to see. We thank the good people of St. John's who have been so positive and for the tallent and love of Fr. Paul Clifford the pastor. Who is he? Here is something about him. A few years ago Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley, OFM, Cap. announced the appointment of Father Paul T. Clifford from pastor of St. Marguerite D’Youville to pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Hopkinton. The effective date of that action was July 17, 2006. Fr. Paul is picking up sign language quickly and has been great working with the interpreters and even adjusting the lighting and many other things. He was very hopstilable to Seminarian Christopher Klausman when he was sick and Fr. Shawn did such a great job taking care of him.

Fr. Shawn has had a great time there.  One day he did five baptisms and he has been saying Mass and preaching on the week day on Monday and Thursday at 9:00 a.m.  He is also doing the Vigil Mass every 1st Saturday of the month.  The other Masses are not yet regularized.

There are more people visiting www.deafcatholic.org and clicking on the calendar to see the times when Fr. Shawn celebrates Mass over at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Hopkinton.  It is good and we are happy that there are more opportunities for good access to the Mass in more places and at more times.  This is great for families who are generous and have many children with busy schedules.

Again, the people at St. John's have been inspired to experience the Mass in Sign Language and have been served well by great voice interpreters.  Fr. Shawn has recieved great feedback and many emails from parishioners saying that they feel like they are more in contact with God through praying at Mass because now they can see the prayers. It helps so many people to see that our disabilities can actually give birth to even greater abilities.  After all the greatest disability of all is death and didn't Jesus show us that death is not to be feared but that it is rather, with Him, the way to eternal and full life?

In Christ,

Fr. St. Martin

In Chpter 8 of the didace it says, "8:1 But as for your fasts, let them not be with the hypocrites, for they fast on the second and fifth days of the week, but do ye fast on the fourth and sixth days. "

As this early teaching of the church shows fasting has been a practuce in the Church's life. Pope Benedicts Letter for Lent this year reminds us of the reality too. How? In fact he doesn't only mention it. He pics gasting as the very subject for his letter.

Fasting from food, drink, words, and entertainment is a way to store up time energy and resources so that we can be better focused on divine things. Loving God more enables us to have authentic love for echother and to do those things of justice mentioned in Issai today.

Fast and in the silence there in you will come closer to God who is love. Then connected with Love you will be able to love others better.

If we try to skip fasting and assume we are close to God and simply try to go out and help the poor we are fools who will be usless to the poor. We might even hurt the poor we try to help as happens in the case of the abortionist or public school promoter of bad sex.

Power full truth about life

No spoken words in this add. It is visual and the point is clear. Like the unborn child who has no voice in the world but does have a form, so too this video is without words spoken but none the less is profound. I don't even think it needs the written words.

Today I also wish to mention this years Message for World Communications Day which was released on the eve of the Feast of Saint Francis de Sales, Patron Saint of Journalists. The Message concerns the new technologies which have made the internet a resource of utmost importance, especially for the so-called digital generation. Undoubtedly, wise use of communications technology enables communities to be formed in ways that promote the search for the true, the good and the beautiful, transcending geographical boundaries and ethnic divisions. To this end, the Vatican has launched a new initiative which will make information and news from the Holy See more readily accessible on the world wide web. It is my hope that this initiative will enrich a wide range of people including those who have yet to find a response to their spiritual yearning through the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ whose message of Good News the Church bears to the ends of the earth (cf. Mt 28:20)!

Deaf seminarian prepares for May 23 ordination

By Neil W. McCabe
Posted: 1/9/2009

“You have five months and 26 days before your ordination,” a woman told Deacon Shawn P. Carey after Mass Dec. 28 at Newton’s Sacred Heart Church.

“I had no idea how many days it was until she told me. I wasn’t even thinking like that but it shows that they are anticipating it,” he said.

“They” are the deaf community of the Archdiocese of Boston, which is eagerly awaiting the ordination of the first member of their community as a priest of Boston.

Although he was ordained a transitional deacon with his classmates at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, Calif., he will be ordained with the other priests for Boston May 23 at the South End’s Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Deacon Carey said through the sign interpretation of Father Jeremy P. St. Martin, the archdiocese’s coordinator of Deaf Ministries.

Father St. Martin said St. Patrick’s Seminary has had other deaf seminarians and its faculty and facilities make it a very accessible and supportive institution.

Deacon Carey said his vocation was clear to him as a boy growing up in Westfield, but there were persistent challenges that he had to overcome. “The Church did not have great access.”

In fact, when it was time for him to prepare for his First Communion, he was unable to participate in the regular religious education classes at his home parish because they were not equipped to instruct a deaf child, he said.

His mother, Kathryn M. Carey, an assistant for the Deaf Apostolate, said the family traveled to Holyoke’s Blessed Sacrament Church, where Deacon Carey’s parents knew the pastor from their days as students at Springfield’s Cathedral High School.

Eventually, his parents found a tutor who, despite being a Protestant, helped prepare him for his First Communion.

While a student himself at Cathedral High School, Deacon Carey said he had an encounter that nearly squashed his vocation for good.

“I needed a note taker for my classes and I asked one of the priests to help me find one,” he said. “The priest told me: ‘That is your problem, not mine.’”

Carey said that response came as a brutal shock. He put aside his vocation and fixed his sights on becoming a lawyer.

“If that is what being a priest was about, I didn’t want to waste my time. As a lawyer, I could help other members of the deaf community and take care of myself,” he said.

It was not until he arrived at Providence College as a political science and business major that he said he found a fully embracing environment for the deaf. “They had great access, including captioning and interpreters. The barriers were really broken down there.”

Calling them the best four years of his life, Deacon Carey was very active in the college’s chapel community and a member of the Sixth Man Society for boosters of the college’s basketball team, the Friars.

At Providence College he met priests who cared about him and devoted their lives to academic excellence. “But, still it never crossed my mind to become a priest,” he said.

After graduation, he moved in with his parents, then living in Wrentham, and started work at Putnam Investments while he prepared to apply to law schools.

As members of Wrentham’s St. Mary Parish, the Careys attended the Sunday 4 p.m. Mass, at which Deaf Ministries arranged for a sign interpreter, he said.

Roberta M. Oles, the parish’s director of religious education, said the then-pastor, Father John G. Connolly, invited Father Michael B. Medas, who was then the director of Deaf Ministries, to celebrate the 4 p.m. Sunday Mass as part of the ministry’s outreach to members of the deaf community.

Father Medas, who now teaches at St. John’s Seminary, said he remembers meeting Deacon Carey after that first time. “He was so kind and gracious, and happy to be able to experience the Mass directly.”

Deacon Carey said, “For the first time, I was able to hear the Lord speaking directly to me through the priest, not through an interpreter.”

Father Medas said over time, Deacon Carey began attending the Mass for deaf Catholics celebrated in American Sign Language Mass every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Newton’s Sacred Heart Church. In addition to attending the Mass regularly, Deacon Carey was a lector at the services and became a pastoral assistant there.

Even before Deacon Carey joined them, members of the deaf community at Sacred Heart had a special devotion that began after a pastoral visit by Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley, he said. Every week a different family takes home a statue of St. Mary given to the community by the cardinal.

During the week the family prays for vocations from and for the deaf community, he said. “It was very interesting that as we were praying for Mary’s intercession for vocations that Shawn came to us. There were many members of the community who saw in him signs that he would be a priest.”

Father Medas said a great deal of the credit for Deacon Carey’s vocation coming to fruition goes to the mindset and encouragement of Cardinal O’Malley. “The cardinal has said ‘If God is calling someone, it is the responsibility of the Church to facilitate that discernment.’”

There will be more and more vocations from the deaf community, he said. Young people who are deaf have the same calling as young people who can hear. “Now, those who are deaf are responding to the possibility that they can answer that call.”

When deacons assist at a Mass, they are allowed, with the permission of the celebrant, to read and preach on the Gospel.

Since his ordination, Deacon Carey said this experience is even more powerful than the experiencing his first Mass in sign.

“Then, I was watching Father Medas sign, it was amazing, but it was still something I received as I was sitting there. Now, I am actively involved,” he said.

“Using my hands to express God’s message to the people is something I feel very deeply,” he said. “Now, I feel inspired, too, because I feel the Holy Spirit moving through me -- through my hands.”

Sr. Kathleen

This is the exact text of Mother Teresa's spiritual communion ( prayer) :

'Jesus in my heart,
I believe in your tender love for me.
I love you.'

(Blessed Teresa of Calcutta)

There is first of all, recognition of the presence of God/Jesus within;
This is followed by an act of faith (in God's love);
These are followed by an/our act of love.

May this simple yet profound prayer help us all to come closer to the Lord
and to give him the consolation of our love!

In Jesus,
Sr. Kathleen
May the Angels lead you into Paradise Mary McCarthy!

HOLY HOUR FOR LIFE JANUARY 21, 2009

Sponsored by Boston Deacons For Life in collaboration with the Office for Clergy Support and Ongoing Formation, and the Pro Life Office of the Archdiocese of Boston

Holy Hours for Life will be held across the Archdiocese of Boston on January 21, the Vigil of the National Day of Prayer and Penance, praying in solidarity with thousands of pilgrims going to Washington, D.C. for the March For Life. The Holy Hours will be held simultaneously at parishes throughout the Archdiocese and on the buses carrying our teens and seminarians to Washington, D.C. We will pray together for those who have been wounded by abortion, for respect for the dignity of human life from conception to natural death, and that those who govern us may be guided by justice, truth, and a love for the gift of life. We are encouraged by the response to this invitation. There are 133 confirmed parishes (plus two convents). If you have not yet had the opportunity to sign up, and in order for your parish to participate with the full support of materials available, the ProLife Office would like to hear from you no later than January 9. All materials are free and are available in English and in Spanish, including the Prayer Booklet for the Holy Hour. For more information, contact the Pro Life Office at 508.651.1900 or ProLifeOffice@rcab.org.
